Creative crafts to get you in the mood for the spooky season
The ghouls and ghosts are coming out, bats are taking flight and the wolves are howling… not really, but the spooky season is upon us once more! With Halloween just around the corner, we thought we’d share some fun activities and creative crafts to get you and your family in the mood for the upcoming All Hallows Eve.
Reminiscing about those childhood memories, we discovered an all-time favourite of the eatsleepdoodle team is stick puppets! So we found some paper, craft sticks and glue and set to work! Our Halloween-themed stick puppets are easy to make and a fun activity for the whole family. Take a look at our video below and learn how to make your own or you can follow our easy step-by-step guide.
You’ll need coloured paper/card, craft/lolly sticks, scissors, a glue stick and PVA glue, fun spooky shapes.
👻 Step 1 - find some coloured card or paper (plain white paper will work, too) and choose your favourite Halloween characters.
👻 Step 2 – cut out those spooky shapes! As you can see in the video above, we stuck our chosen images onto the coloured paper and cut around the shape. We found this was a quick and easy way to make our characters.
👻 Step 3 – once all your shapes have been cut out, you can use the leftover paper to add additional details, or you can draw on them using pens or crayons to make features for those spooky puppets! If using leftover paper, you can use the glue stick to attach these features to your shapes!
👻 Step 4 – use PVA glue to attach the characters to your craft sticks. Make sure they are secure and then let them dry completely.
👻 Step 5 – put on a spooky puppet show for friends and family!
Crafting activities wouldn’t be complete without some sewing! We found this cute sew-your-own felt spider kit – perfect for Halloween decorations! The kit contains coloured wool blend felt shapes, step-by-step instructions, embroidery thread, polyester toy filling, glue, a needle and woven hanging thread – you’ll only need to supply the scissors.
If you fancy a fun, autumnal day out for the whole family you can’t go wrong with a pumpkin patch! You can pick your own pumpkins, ready for decorating and carving (and great for some cute pictures, too!). Country Living has put together a list of the best pumpkin patches to visit in the UK – take a look and see if there’s one close by!
Thinking of having a Halloween party this year, but can’t find the right table decorations? We’ve got it covered! Using our doodle grid tablecloth and our artist set of 20 wash-out pens, we created an exciting, spooky tablecloth perfect for any party – and you can do the same! You could also use it as a party activity – use a blank tablecloth and partygoers can draw their own spooky monsters, pumpkins, spiders and more. This makes a fun and sustainable party decoration – that can be used again and again (you could even change the drawings each year)!
If you’re heading out Trick-or-Treating this year and need something to carry all your sweets home in – our doodle backpack is the perfect thing! With the included set of 10 wash-out pens, you can colour and doodle whatever you’d like before you head out on a spooky adventure. They even make a great party bag, for kids to decorate and take home!
As you can probably tell, we love everything creative and crafty and hope we’ve given you some half-term and Halloween inspiration for this year!
